London, 12 December 2022 – Circulor, the leading supply chain traceability solution, applauds the EU Council and Parliament for reaching provisional agreement on the EU Battery Regulation on Friday 9th December 2022.

For batteries manufactured in or placed into service on the European market, the regulation sets:

• Collection and recovery targets,
• Mandatory minimum levels of recycled content
• Requirements for measuring and reporting embedded carbon emissions
• Requirements for ensuring battery materials are responsibly and ethically sourced
• Requirements for each battery to have a “battery passport” and QR code to make transparent and visible all relevant sourcing, production, and safety information.

The regulation’s requirement that each battery have a battery passport ensures that the EU battery industry builds a highly competitive and circular battery economy, hand-in-hand with building one that is responsible, safe, and transparent.

Battery passports will be required in early 2026 and will need to share information on the origin and production journey of materials, embedded emissions, ethical and responsible sourcing, percentage of recycled content, and state of health and lifecycle management. This battery passport data will then need to be accessible via QR code to different stakeholders within the battery ecosystem, as outlined in the Battery Regulation.
